There are a few admin settings you need to check and set up before you are ready to publish your blog. The following steps will help you achieve this. They are straight forward and easy to understand.
Note: You must be logged in as an administrator to make the following changes.

First Time Blogging WordPress Settings
Step 1 ) Log into your site as an Administrator and go to Settings in the sidebar menu to check the following admin options.
WP Admin Settings
- General
- Writing
- Reading
- Discussion
- Media
- Permalinks
- Privacy
General Settings
Step 2 ) Log in as an Administrator and go to Settings -> General and check the following options.
- Site Title
- Tagline = In a few words, explain what this site is about.
- WordPress Address (URL)
- Site Address (URL) = Enter the address here if you want your site homepage to be different from the directory you installed WordPress.
- E-mail Address = This address is used for admin purposes, like new user notification.
- Membership = Anyone can register
- New User Default Role
- Timezone = Choose a city in the same timezone as you.
- This timezone is currently in standard time.
- This timezone does not observe daylight saving time.
- Date Format
- Time Format
- Week Starts On
- Site Language
- Click on Save Changes button when you finish setting up these options.
Writing Settings
Step 3 ) Go to Settings -> Writing and check the following options.
- Formatting = Convert emoticons like
and
to graphics on display, WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically
- Default Post Category
- Default Post Format
- Default Link Category
- Click on Save Changes button when you finish setting up these options.
Reading Settings
Step 4 ) Go to Settings -> Reading and check the following options.
- Front page displays = Your latest posts or A static page (select below) Front page: Posts page:
- Blog pages show at most
- Syndication feeds show the most recent
- For each article in a feed, show = Full text or Summary
- Search Engine Visibility = Discourage search engines from indexing this site “It is up to search engines to honour this request.”
- Click on Save Changes button when you finish setting up these options.
Discussion Settings
Step 5 ) Go to Settings -> Discussion and check the following options.
- Default article settings
- Other comment settings
- E-mail me whenever
- Before a comment appears
- Comment Moderation
- Comment Backlinks
- Avatars = I recommend the following plugin WP User Avatar to manage your avatars.
- Click on Save Changes button when you finish setting up these options.
Media Settings
Step 6 ) Go to Settings -> Media and check the following options.
- Thumbnail size
- Medium size
- Large size
- Uploading Files
- Click on Save Changes button when you finish setting up these options.
Permalinks Settings
Step 7 ) Go to Settings -> Permalinks and check the following options.

Common Settings
- Plain
- Day and name
- Month and name
- Numeric
- Post name
- Custom Structure
Optional
- Category base
- Tag base
- Click on Save Changes button when you finish setting up these options.
Privacy Settings
Step 8 ) Go to Settings -> Privacy and check the following options as illustrated in the following image.
- Select one of your privacy policy pages created and click on Use This Page button.
- Or click on Create New Page button to create a new privacy policy page.
