First Time Blogging WordPress Admin Settings talks about the admin settings for General, Writing, Reading, Discussion, Media and more.

There are a few admin settings you need to check and set up before you are ready to publish your blog. The following steps will help you achieve this. They are straight forward and easy to understand.

Note: You must be logged in as an administrator to make the following changes. These settings are based on WordPress 5.7.2.

First Time Blogging WordPress Settings

Step 1 ) Log into your site as an Administrator and go to Settings in the sidebar menu to check the following admin options.

  • General
  • Writing
  • Reading
  • Discussion
  • Media
  • Permalinks
  • Privacy

General Settings

Step 2 ) Log in as an Administrator and go to Settings -> General as illustrated in the image below to enable the following options.

General Settings Part 1

  • Site Title
  • Tagline = In a few words, explain what this site is about.
  • WordPress Address (URL)
  • Site Address (URL) = Enter the address here if you want your site homepage to be different from the directory you installed WordPress. Note: The following link giving-wordpress-its-own-directory link can help you.
  • Administration Email Address = This address is used for admin purposes, like new user notification.

Step 2-a ) The following image allows you to enable the following options.

General Settings Part 2

  • Membership = Anyone can register
  • New User Default Role
  • Site Language

Step 2-b ) The following image allows you to enable the following options.

General Settings Part 3

  • Timezone = Choose a city in the same timezone as you.
  • Date Format
  • Time Format
  • Week Starts On
  • Click on Save Changes button when you finish setting up these options.

Writing Settings

Step 3 ) Go to Settings -> Writing and check the following options.

  • Default Post Category
  • Default Post Format

Step 3-a ) The following image Post via email allows you to set up the following options.

Post via email

  • Mail server
    • Port
  • Login Name
  • Password
  • Default Mail Category
  • Click on Save Changes button when you finish setting up these options.

Step 3-b ) The following image Update Services allows you to set up the following options. When you publish a new post, WordPress automatically notifies the following site update services. For more information about this, see Update Services on the Codex.

Update Services

  • Separate multiple service URLs with line breaks.
  • Click on Save Changes button when you finish setting up these options.

Reading Settings

Step 4 ) Go to Settings -> Reading to setup the following options.

  • Your Home Page Displays
    • Your latest posts
    • A static page (select below)
      • Homepage:
      • Posts page:

Step 4-a ) The following image allows you to setup the following options.

Reading Settings Part 2

  • Blog pages show at most
  • Syndication feeds show the most recent
  • For each post in a feed, include
    • Full text
    • Summary
  • Search Engine Visibility = Discourage search engines from indexing this site. It is up to search engines to honor this request.
  • Click on Save Changes button when you finish setting up these options.

Discussion Settings

Step 5 ) Go to Settings -> Discussion to setup the discussion options.

Media Settings

Step 6 ) Go to Settings -> Media to setup the following options.

Image sizes

  • Thumbnail size
    • Width
    • Height
    • Check the following box Crop thumbnail to exact dimensions (normally thumbnails are proportional) if you want to crop your thumbnail images.
  • Medium size
    • Max Width
    • Max Height
  • Large size
    • Max Width
    • Max Height
  • Uploading Files = Check this box Organize my uploads into month- and year-based folders if you want to organize your uploaded files.
  • Click on Save Changes button when you finish setting up these options.

Permalinks Settings

Step 7 ) Go to Settings -> Permalinks to setup the permalinks options.

Privacy Settings

Step 8 ) Go to Settings -> Privacy to setup the privacy options.
