Setup WordPress Multisite Locally Using Xampp helps you to understand and set up a multisite locally using Xampp.

I am not going to go into details on how to set up a Multisite locally using Xampp because the following developers Tips And Tricks HQ have put together a fantastic documentation. Setup WordPress Multisite Locally Using Xampp

Step 1 ) Once you have installed the multisite environment following the above instructions, you will see the following features on your dashboard.

The following image displays the Network Admin menu. This menu allows you to manage and control the following options.

  • Dashboard
  • Sites
  • Users
  • Themes
  • Plugins
  • Settings

The following image displays the admin Admin Site menu. The first site added is the site created when installing and setting up the Multisite which is the admin site. For this example I created a site named WP Multi Site Test. This menu allows you to manage and control the following options.

  • Dashboard
  • New Post
  • Manage Comments
  • Visit Site

The following image displays the admin top level menu. This menu allows you to manage and control the following options.

  • Visit Site
  • Edit Site

The rest of the menu structure is the same as a normal WordPress installation.

Note: Always check to make sure where you are in the network. For example if you want manage the network make sure you are in the Network Admin site not in a Sub site.

Step 2 ) Go to Admin Dashboard to start creating and adding your sites to your network. The following image shows you the admin menu and allows you to control the following options.

  • Home
  • Updates
  • Upgrade Network
  • Sites
  • User
  • Themes
  • Plugins
  • Settings

When you view the Dashboard you will have the option to click on Upgrade Network link which is the same as the link in the admin sidebar menu. You can click on the following links Create a New Site or Create a New User.

Once your multi site starts populating you will have the option to search for users and sites via the dashboard as illustrated in the following image.

That is all it takes to set up a Multisite and now you are ready to start adding sites, plugins, themes and much more.
