OpenOffice is an office package just like Microsoft Office. The huge difference between both is the price tag. OpenOffice is free while Microsoft isn’t. Of course there are other factors to consider. Microsoft has a great reputation and controls a huge market with their office product. OpenOffice on the other hand has a decent number of followers who don’t have much money to spend and need a word processor and maybe other office software.
Remember, OpenOffice is also compatible with Microsoft Office. Although you might run into some bugs, this depends on what features are included in for example a word document from Word opened using OpenOffice. Anyhow it is up to you to choose one or the other, depending on your needs.
